ATLANTA -- Rookie guard Dennis Schroder of the Atlanta Hawks has been suspended for one game without pay for striking DeMarcus Cousins of the Sacramento Kings in the groin. The suspension was announced by Rod Thorn, the NBAs president of basketball operations. Schroder will sit out Thursday nights game in Denver against the Nuggets. With just less than 10 minutes left in Atlantas 105-100 victory on Tuesday night, Schroder hit Cousins with his left hand while trying to get around a pick near the top of the key. The highlight of his brief stay with them was on April 12 when he hit a tying three-run homer with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning against the New York Mets Jose Valverde for his 2,000th career hit. The Angels also optioned right-hander Cam Bedrosian to Double-A Arkansas, after he gave up nine runs, eight hits and seven walks in 5 2/3 innings over his first six big league appearances. Infielder Efren Navarro was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake, and right-hander David Carpenter was added to the major league roster. Ibanez, the second-oldest player in the majors behind Jason Giambi, bbatted .dddddddddddd157 with three homers and 21 RBIs in 190 plate appearances for the Angels after signing a one-year deal for $2.75 million during the off-season. As a result of the capital increase, the three partners will each hold an 8.33-per cent stake, with the remaining 75 per cent being owned by its members. By the time that happened, it was too late for Iowa State. Daniels scored 19 of his 27 points in the second half, and the Huskies hung on for an 81-76 victory Friday to reach the East Regional final a year after UConn was barred from the NCAA tournament. "DeAndres a scorer, and once you feel that you have that confidence, the next shots going to go in," said senior Shabazz Napier, who knows a thing or two about scoring himself. "We kept feeding him, and he got super hot." Daniels hit his first six shots after halftime, the only Husky to make a field goal for over 8 1/2 minutes. His 3-pointer gave seventh-seeded UConn a 49-32 lead. The third-seeded Cyclones rallied late, pulling within 67-63 with 2 1/2 minutes remaining. But senior Niels Giffey hit a 3 in the corner for his first points since the games opening moments, and when the Huskies (29-8) made their free throws in the final minute, the UConn fans packing Madison Square Garden could celebrate. The Huskies will face fourth-seeded Michigan State on Sunday for a trip to the Final Four after the Spartans beat top-seeded Virginia 61-59 in the late game. Dustin Hogue scored a career-high 34 points for Iowa State (28-8), but Big 12 player of the year Melvin Ejim was 3 of 13 for seven points, more than 11 below his average. The Cyclones, in the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2000, were playing their second game without third-leading scorer Georges Niang, who broke his foot in their tournament opener. They trailed by 16 with less than 7 1/2 minutes to go but nearly came all the way back behind Hogues scoring inside. "Thats who these guys are, theyre fighters," coach Fred Hoiberg said. With UConn clinging to a 70-65 lead and less than a minute left, Iowa States Naz Long missed a 3-pointer, and the 6-1 Napier pulled down the rebound and was fouled by Hogue. The guard calmly drilled both free throws. UConn was 20 of 22 from the foul linne, while Iowa State was 6 of 15.dddddddddddd Napier, the American Athletic Conference player of the year, drained four early 3-pointers, then made only one more field goal the rest of the way. But the quick start by Napier and backcourt mate Ryan Boatright opened up space for the 6-foot-9 Daniels, an inconsistent junior who can score all over the court when hes on. Since a stretch in late February and early March when he failed to reach double figures in four straight games, Daniels had averaged 15 in his last six outings before Friday. Then against Iowa State, he shot 10 of 15 and pulled down 10 rebounds. "With our seniors on this team, I just want them to go out with a bang," Daniels said. Ejim and DeAndre Kane, Iowa States top scorers, were a combined 9 of 31. But Hogue, from nearby Yonkers, found plenty of space, shooting 15 for 19. "To play in the Garden, its something I dreamed about as a kid," he said. After Napiers difficult early 3-pointers -- he was falling away on two of them and stepping back to open a sliver of space on a third -- Boatright and Daniels took over. The three combined for all but six of the Huskies points as they built a 36-26 halftime lead. Second-year coach Kevin Ollie is now 3-0 in the NCAA tournament after taking over for mentor Jim Calhoun, who gave him a big hug after this one was over. The last time UConn made it this far, the Huskies won a national title when Napier and Giffey were freshmen. The current upperclassmen could have transferred after the programs low scores on the NCAAs academic progress measure kept UConn from last years Big East and NCAA tournaments. "We were banned from a lot of things," Ollie said. "We couldnt come here for the tournament, but they werent banned from loving and pushing and encouraging each other, and thats what its all about. Those dark times, if you dont give up in the dark times, it will reverse, the wind will start going in your favour, your direction. "And I think thats whats happened now." Were heading into the final stretch, when the most outstanding of the outstanding truly prove themselves in going above already lofty expectations to secure that playoff spot; that home field advantage; that division title. While the race for Most Outstanding Player will be won and lost over the next six weeks, we take a look at the candidates who have done enough to put themselves in the late season conversation with the TSN.ca MOP Watch. Through the first 13 weeks of the 2013 season, who is the frontrunner for the leagues top individual award? The Saskatchewan Roughriders had two top candidates in RB Kory Sheets and QB Darian Durant through the first half of the season, but both have since fallen back to the pack, coinciding with the Riders recent fall in the standings. Durants dimmed star has been due to some uneven play the past three weeks while Sheets has been injury related. Toronto Argonauts QB Rickyy Ray is another candidate to lose ground to injury.dddddddddddd Prior to his shoulder woes the veteran had a dazzling stat line of 15 touchdowns to zero interceptions and a nearly 80 percent completion rate. If Ray and backup Zach Collaros could share the award, it would all but be wrapped up. The young Collaros is making a case for himself as it is, most recently leading the Argos to a three-game road winning streak in Rays stead. All these injuries opened the door to players like Henry Burris, who leads the league in passing in Hamilton, and Jon Cornish, the league leader in average yards per carry with the Stampeders. Meanwhile Edmontons first-year starter Mike Reilly has put up the individual numbers to warrant MOP consideration but his teams win/loss record hampers his case. VANCOUVER, BC – Thursday night in St. Louis, Alex Edler will play his 500th National Hockey League game. Cynics would suggest the big Swedish defenseman has played 250 good games for the Vancouver Canucks and has had 249 tough ones with no middle ground. That’s not entirely accurate although it does speak to the inconsistency that has plagued Edler’s nine years in the NHL – from shift to shift and from season to season. So it is safe to say that while Edler will reach the 500-game milestone tomorrow, questions remain about what is possible for the 28-year-old with the tantalizing combination of size, skill and skating ability. Throughout his career, Edler has teased the Canucks and their fans with glimpses of the kind of blueliner who can control games at both ends of the ice. When living up to his potential, he clearly has the ability to play with remarkable efficiency making quick and effective decisions with the puck. Edler has also brought a physical edge to his game leaving his mark on opposing forwards in open ice, in front of the net or in battles along the boards. But last season, Edler was none of those things. He was a shell of his former self enduring a disastrous season in which anything that could go wrong did – and far too often. Perhaps it was a new coach or a new system, maybe it was confusion caused by an early season suspension in which he was penalized for being a touch too aggressive or it may have been the weighty expectations that accompanied his six-year $30 million dollar contract extension which kicked in last season. Whatever the reasons, Edler’s 2013-14 was a write-off with just 22 points all the while saddled with the embarrassment that goes along with a league-worst -39. Paired with reliable partner Chris Tanev from the outset of training camp and in Willie Desjardins’ up-tempo system in which defenseman are encouraged to jump into the rush, Alex Edler finds himself in a situation to thrive. However, the early season results are mixed. He has a goal and two assists and leads all Canucks defensemen in scoring, but there have also been a handful of the kind of miscues that dogged him last season. Edler doesn’t have to be a super hero for the Vancouver Canucks, but given the amount he plays and the situations he finds himself in he certainly has to be an offensive contributor and a 40-point season shouldn’t be out of the question. But for his offensive numbers to matter, he has to be significantly better in his own zone than he was a year ago. The Canucks would love to see Edler take charge out on the ice, but for that to happen the soft-spoken Swede needs to ramp up his intensity. Far too often, he looks indifferent and at times as if he doesn’t really care. That’s probably an unfair criticism, and yet because he shies away from the media and isn’t heard from often, it’s hard to get a read on what’s going on in Edler’s mind. Reaching the 500 game mark is an accomplishment for any NHLer – and, in this day and age, to do it with the same organization makes it that much more significant. Edler’s is a remarkable story of a kid from a small town near the Arctic Circle making the big time and earning all the trappings that come along with it. But the big question is – and it’s a fascinating one – have the Vancouver Canucks already seen the best Alex Edler has to offer? Or is there still room for growth in his game? While unlikely to ever enter the Norris Trophy discussion in an era of so many elite defensemen, Edler possesses the tools to be an All-Star. But in recent years there have been too many nights where you wondered if he had forgotten how to play the game. This is a new season and Alex Edler’s trying his best to wipe the slate clean as he tries to recapture the talent he has displayed at times throughout his NHL career. Thursday in St. Louis is a milestone to be sure. The Canucks have to be hoping that it’s also a stepping stone to the best hockey the big defenseman has ever played. Matt Duchene Jersey . Instead, the 32-year-old Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive end returned to the field in 2014 and had one of the best seasons of his career. This time, he knew right away he wanted to come back.On Thursday, the Riders signed Foley to a contract extension. With last weeks re-signing of Tearrius George and John Chick being under contract, Saskatchewan has solidified its defensive line heading into the 2015 campaign. The Riders posted a CFL-high 61 sacks this past season.Foley said he knew about 15 minutes after Saskatchewan fell 18-10 to Edmonton in the West Division semifinal that he wanted to return rather than retire or become a free agent Feb. 10.I think collectively as soon as the season was done and we realized we were going home ... the somberness turned to almost anger, like Man, we could have won, we should have won, this sucks. OK were coming back next year, Foley said during a news conference. I know me and T-George, we had a moment where we knew we would be better next year, and we were going to come back and do this.Foley, Chick and George are veteran players in their early 30s but each is still playing at a high level. Chick had a CFL-best 15 sacks, three more than George.FFoley, a six-foot-three 245-pound native of Courtice, Ont.dddddddddddd, matched a career high last season with 12 sacks while adding 54 defensive tackles. He was named the Riders most outstanding Canadian for the 2014 campaign but believes he can do better. The film doesnt lie, he said. We missed a lot of sacks this year, we missed a lot of plays. We still finished with good numbers, but were still excited by what were capable of.Saskatchewan GM Brendan Taman said Foleys extension has been in the works for some time but the team needed to clear some logistical hurdles before making it official.Hes a good Canadian and you want those guys around, Taman said. He really had a good year for us, and weve pretty much solidified our D-line now.Taman said there is still work to do on the defence. Saskatchewan needs a new defensive co-ordinator to replace Richie Hall and faces the task of re-signing hard-hitting safety Tyron Brackenridge.Foley captured his first Grey Cup title in 06 with B.C. before winning in 12 with Toronto. He said while the Roughriders might have trouble getting free agents due to perceptions of the climate, its tough for a player to leave Saskatchewan after suiting up there. The fan support here on game day is amazing, he said. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Memo Gidley and Matteo Malucelli were admitted to a Daytona Beach hospital Saturday night for further testing following a two-car accident right before the three-hour mark of the Rolex 24 at Daytona. IMSA officials said both drivers were awake and communicating, but gave no other information about their conditions. Gidley was driving for the pole-winning GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing team. He had to be cut out of the No. 99 Corvette, which crumpled like an accordion when he plowed into the back of Malucellis Ferrari. The cars were heading into the kink in the infield portion of the track facing directly into the sun. Malucellis car had apparently lost power -- his team said he radioed he was pulling out of the way -- as the cars headed into a high-speed turn. At the same time, Gidley tried to lap a slower car. He pulled out to the left and tried to duck under the lapped car, apparently didnt see Malucelli off the pace, and drove directly into the Ferrari at nearly full speed. The race was red-flagged as emergency workers tended to both drivers. They were placed onto stretchers, loaded into ambulances and taken to Halifax Health Medical Center, located roughly a mile outside the race track. "This stuff, it happens, its racing. But you never expect it to be your car, your team," said Gidley teammate Darren Law. Olivier Beretta, Malucellis teammate on the Risi Competizione team, saw a replay of the accident and wondered if the glare played a role in the wreck. "Its difficult to say because its the sun going down, and in this corner you dont see very well," Beretta said. "I dont know. I honestly dont know. The most important thing right now is Matteo, the rest I dont care. Its just Matteo and the other driver." Many drivers inquired about Gidleys condition. Christian Fittipaldi passed by the accident scene before the race was stopped and was concerned for Gidleys well-being. "At that point, conditions were really hard. The sun was setting. There were two points on the track where you couldnt see anything," Fittipaldi said. "One was at start-finish and the other point was coming out of Turn 3 and coming out of the kink. I imagined there was a slow car ahead of him and he couldnt see." The clock ticked off roughly 90 minutes under combined red and yellow flag following the accident before racing resumed. The sun had gone down and the drivers had turned on their headlights by the time the field went green again. The bizarre accident was yet another disappointment for the GAINSCO team, which was the surprising pole winner Thursday despite limited preseason testing and a thin budget that has the organization planning to run only five of the 13 events in the in the inaugural United SportsCar Championship season. The odds were stacked against the GAINSCO team winning the race -- since 1994 only three pole winners have reached Victory Lane in the twice-around-the-clock endurance event -- but a strong showing would have sufficed. Although the team won the pole in 2007 and finished second in 2008, it has finished no better than seventh since and had DNFs in 2010 and was 89 laps off the pace in 2012. When racing did resume, the event got its feel good moment when Wayne Taylor came out of retirement to briefly get behind the wheel of the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette. The 58-year-old last raced in 2010, in this event, but was talked into driving one stint as an opportunity to join the lineup with sons with Ricky and Jordan. The opportunity came about when Ricky rejoined the team that won the Grand-AM driver championship last season with Jordan Taylor and Max Angelelli. Wayne Taylor, despite his vocal reluctance to do much in the car, seemed to be on pace as he battled Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan. "My Dad just held Tony Kanaan off for two laps. I have a very cool Dad!" Jordan Taylor posted on Twitter. The plan had been for Ricky Taylor, who started the race, to turn the car over to his father. But the driver change came as the sun was setting, and the team decided at the last minute to instead have Angelelli drive second. "When I got out of the car, there was a big glare and he has had trouble with his eyes and his old age," Ricky Taylor said, laughing slightly. "We would like to put him in in the nighttime, and preferably under yellow, because hes also a little on the shorter side. He has a big insert in his seat and we have to get him snug in there tight. We have to loosen our belts up a lot." His sons said their father has been protesting competing in the event, but they believe hes secretly enjoying himself. "After the race he will look back on it and be very happy that we made it happen and that we got through it," Ricky Taylor said. "He is hating it. He doesnt enjoy driving anymore. He always wants to get out of the car. But every time he is finished driving, hes happy." Jae Crowder Jersey . "I went in and talked a little bit about what I saw, congratulated them on facing some tough adversity and winning, thanked them, and then proceeded to cancel the day off that they had tomorrow," he said after the Jets 5-1 victory that snapped a five-game losing streak. "It was good enough tonight but we cant rely on that being good enough in our next game. Weve just got to get better." It was his first night behind the bench after taking over from Claude Noel, who was fired as the Jets struggled lately to beat even teams below them in the standings. The Coyotes (21-15-9) dont fit into that category although they too have struggled recently after a strong start. They opened the season at 14-4-4, have gone 7-11-6 since and Monday was their third loss in a row. "It cant get much lower and we have to get better," said captain Shane Doan. "It seems that we find new ways (to lose) every time. We havent really had an issue with discipline so far this year with penalties and this time we did. You cant create much offence when youre shorthanded." Phoenix handed the Jets eight power plays, although with one of the worst records in the NHL with the man advantage Winnipeg only managed to capitalize on one of them. Fans who have been booing the lacklustre play of the home team lately were on their feet cheering and clapping for much of the game. They didnt even wait until the game started to show how they felt about the coaching change. Maurice got his first cheer during the national anthem when his face showed on the scoreboard. "Its a whole lot nicer being on the home bench when you win Im sure, but it was a very special moment for me in my career and Ill cherish it," said the coach. Olli Jokinen, Eric ODell, Blake Wheeler, Michael Frolik and Devin Setoguchi scored for the Jets (20-23-5), who outshot the Coyotes 38-19. Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored for Phoenix but it was the only shot Ondrej Pavelec would let in and he won praise for his play from his new coach.dddddddddddd "I felt safe with him," said Maurice. Ekman-Larsson scored on the power play at 12:16 but the Coyotes didnt have much time to celebrate. "They did the one thing that we had talked about," said Maurice. "That when adversity came to the door, that next goal was huge." Jokinen batted a behind-the-net pass from Dustin Byfuglien past Mike Smith at 12:52 to tie it up and then ODell scored his second of the season as he dashed in to snap in another at 18:00. Thanks to four power-play opportunities the Jets outshot Phoenix 12-7 in the first period but both their goals were even strength. Winnipegs power play is ranked 25th in the NHL. The Jets kept up the pressure in the second until Wheeler backhanded Mark Scheifeles rebound past Smith to make it 3-1. At the halfway mark of the period the Jets had outshot Phoenix 9-1. They finished the game ahead 38-19. Frolik made it 4-1 at 4:18 of the third when his angled shot beat Smiths glove. Winnipegs power play continued to be toothless until midway through the third when Setoguchi dropped to one knee as he slammed one past Smith and Byfuglien picked up his second assist of the night. "To a man we did a good job of being ready tonight and playing the right way," said captain Andrew Ladd. "I thought we did a good job of getting a lot of pucks to the net and keeping it simple." Setoguchi, who broke a goal-scoring drought that stretched back to Dec. 2, couldnt say whether the coaching change made the difference. "I think everyones work ethic was there and thats what gave us a chance to win the game," he said. Notes: This was only the third time the new Jets have played the old Jets since the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg, but with realignment they face each other twice more this season as part of the Western Conference. MASON, Ohio -- Venus Williams left her winning touch in Canada. Williams knocked off sister Serena while reaching the finals in Montreal on Sunday, finishing runner-up. She lost to Lucie Safarova 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4 in the first round Tuesday. "I wish I could have felt today like I did in Montreal, just to make it more competitive," Williams said. The tournament lost its other defending champion when Victoria Azarenka withdrew because of an injured right knee. Williams had an energizing week in Canada and hoped to keep their momentum going in Cincinnati, using it as a springboard to the U.S. Open. But her successful week came with a cost. Williams arrived Sunday night and opened Tuesday morning, leaving little time to recover from her deep tournament run. "Yeah, it was definitely a quick turnaround," she said. "Maybe it would have been a little better to play a little later in the day. But I think she just played so well. No matter what shot I hit, she hit a winner." Safarova led 5-2 in the third set and appeared to have won a match point, but Williams challenged and the call was overturned. Williams rallied to win the set and then another. "Thats a terrible feeling," Safarova said. "You think youve won and you have those emotions, and suddenly, youre back in the match against a great player. Then she broke me, and I thought, Uh, oh. Ive lost matches on challenges before. I told myself, Im not losing this one." Azarenkas withdrawal is the latest setback in a season full of injuries. Shes been sidelined for much of the year with an ailing left foot. She aggravated an injury to her right knee at Montreal, where she lost in the quarter-finals, and hoped a few days of rest would take care of it. She decided to withdraw after practising Tuesday morning. "I started to feel a little bit better and did everything I could, but its just not enough time for me to feel good to play a full match," she said. "Im going to get more treatment and get more work done and should be good for the U.S. Open." Fifth-seeded Maria Sharapova broke Madison Keys to go up 3-0 in the final set and held on for a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win that was gratifying. She was coming off a loss in the third round at Montreal. "I didnt have a great week last week," she said. "No matter who is across the net, its never easy going out in the first round because you want to change that result around. You want to change your attitude and your performance and obviously the result." ------ Freelance writer Mark Schmetzer contributed to this report. Lamar Jackson Jersey . The league announced Thursday that Tom Higgins is leaving that post effective immediately.BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The "for sale" sign is up at the Buffalo Bills with the hiring of financial and legal advisers who may begin talking with prospective buyers within the next month. The announcement Wednesday of a transaction team that includes Morgan Stanley financial advisers and Proskauer Rose legal experts came a day after the Bills chief financial officer, Jeffrey Littmann, updated NFL owners and Commissioner Roger Goodell about the sale process during league meetings in Atlanta. The Bills, whose long-term future became uncertain with the death of owner Ralph Wilson in March, were last valued by Forbes to be worth $870 million. The price tag is expected to approach $1 billion because NFL teams dont often come up for sale and numerous prospective owners may become involved in the bidding. The Cleveland Browns sold for about that much when Jimmy Haslam purchased the team in 2012. A new owner could be selected by Wilsons estate by the end of July and presented for approval at league meetings in October. Donald Trump and former Buffalo quarterback Jim Kelly are among those whove shown interest in owning the Bills. Another prospective group could include Toronto-based businessmen Larry Tanenbaum, chairman of Maple Leeaf Sports and Entertainment, and Edward Rogers, deputy chairman of Rogers Communications.dddddddddddd Other names that have been circulating include Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula and former owner B. Thomas Golisano. Amid fears a new owner could eventually relocate the team, Golisano said he would do all he could to ensure the Bills future in western New York. The family of Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs also has said he would work to keep the Bills in Buffalo without saying whether he would bid for the team. Bills President Russ Brandon said in a statement that the transaction team would ensure that the sale complies both with NFL rules and the teams obligations to New York State and Erie County under a 10-year lease agreement that essentially locks the Bills into playing at Ralph Wilson Stadium through the 2019 season. Goodell this month said a new stadium would be the next step in securing the teams long-term future. Under the current lease, reached in December 2012, the Bills would incur a $400 million penalty by even broaching the prospect of moving during the leases term. There is a one-time exception that would allow the Bills to break the agreement for just under $28.4 million in 2020. Final Score: Minnesota 7, Buffalo 0 Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Devan Dubnyk turned aside all 18 shots he faced in his Minnesota debut and the Wild got goals from seven different players in a 7-0 rout of the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday. He became the first goalie in franchise history to post a shutout in his first appearance with the team. Zach Parise, Kyle Brodziak, Thomas Vanek and Erik Haula all posted a goal and an assist, while Jason Pominville had three assists for Minnesota. The Wild had lost six straight games. Final Score: Tampa Bay 3, Edmonton 2 Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Ben Bishop made 30 saves and the Tampa Bay Lightning did just enough to top the Edmonton Oilers, 3-2, on Thursday. Tampa Bay was outshot 32-19, but Ondrej Palats two goals in the third period put the Lightning in front. Steven Stamkos also lit the lamp for Tampa Bay to help end a two-game losing streak. The Oilers got a pair of goals from Benoit Pouliot, but could not tie the game late. Ben Scrivens made 16 saves on 19 shots as Edmonton fell for the 14th straight time on the road. Final Score: Colorado 4, Florida 2 Sunrise, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Holden scored the go-ahead goal at 11:03 of the third period, and the Colorado Avalanche went on to post a 4-2 victory over the Florida Panthers on Thursday night. Jacoby Brissett completed 15-of-26 passes for 262 yards with one touchdown for the Wolfpack (8-5), who had gone 3-9 in coach Dave Doerens first season in 2013. They played their butts off, said Doeren of his team. The rest of the coaches did a great job and the players made it all possible. Im really proud of all our players. Dayes totaled 78 yards on 13 carries while his backfield mate, Shadrach Thornton, rushed 17 times for 96 yards and added a touchdown pass. UCFs Justin Holman threw three touchdown passes to Josh Reese, the last coming with 1:44 left in the game, but the Knights (9-4), with no timeouts remaining, were unable to secure the onside kick. Give credit to NC State, they made some plays and we didnt make enough plays, said UCF head coach George OLeary. We just let the game get out of whack a little bit. Holman was 23-of-53 for 291 yards with one interception, and Breshad Perriman had 138 yards on nine receptions. Niklas Sade nailed a 45-yard field goal to give NC State a 34-13 lead early in the fourth quarter, but missed a 47-yard try wide right with 2:56 left to play, keeping UCFs hopes of a comeback alive. Holman threw a 19-yard pass to Perriman on 4th-and-14 from the NC State 43- yard line before hooking up with Reese for a 2-yard score. Reese hauled in a 14-yard touchdown earlier in the fourth. Shawn Moffitt kicked a 40-yard field goal for UCF to cap the games opening possession, then NC State responded on its first drive to take a 7-3 lead.dddddddddddd Thornton threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jaylen Samuels, who made the catch in tight coverage near the right sideline. Thornton managed to deliver the throw with a defender bearing down on him. The Knights, who captured their second straight American Athletic Conference title, reclaimed the lead when Holman hit Reese on a 6-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. But a blown coverage by the UCF defense led to a 37-yard touchdown grab by Johnathan Alston that put NC State back ahead shortly after. After a Knights punt, Brissett completed a 33-yard pass to Bo Hines on 3rd- and-22 from the Wolfpack 12 and then found Hines on a 45-yard strike. The long completion set up a 1st-and-goal at the 4, but NC State was held to a 19- yard Sade field goal. The Wolfpack were in position for another field goal attempt just before halftime, but the clock ran out when Brissett was sacked with no timeouts remaining. Brissett shook off the mistake by orchestrating a nine-play, 75-yard drive to begin the third. Dayes reached the end zone on consecutive runs of 11 and 24 yards after Alston caught a 12-yard pass on 3rd-and-7. Dayes later scored on a 15-yard run after Moffitt made a 36-yarder. Eugene, OR - Marcus Mariota wasnt about to let Stanford end Oregons hopes for a national championship again. Or a Pac-12 title either. Mariota threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for two more as the fifth- ranked Ducks routed Stanford 45-16 on Saturday night. The Ducks were 10-0 before suffering a 17-14 overtime home loss to the Cardinal in 2012 and ripped off eight straight wins to open the 2013 campaign prior to a 26-20 defeat at Stanford. The Cardinal went on to win the Pac-12 title in both of those seasons. This years matchup was never in doubt. Kevin Hogan and Mariota traded interceptions to start the third and Stanford turned Mariotas second pick of the year into a 25-yard Jordan Williamson field goal, trimming the deficit to 24-16. Oregon, though, put up three straight touchdowns against the nations second- ranked scoring defense to put the game out of reach. The Heisman trophy candidate Mariota, who had never beaten Stanford in his career, was 19-of-30 for 258 yards and added 85 rushing yards on nine carries for the Ducks (8-1, 5-1 Pac-12), who have won four straight since their lone loss to Arizona in Eugene on Oct. 2. Oregon could be in line for one of the top four spots in the College Football Playoff rankings Tuesday following No. 4 Mississippis home loss to third- ranked Auburn. Thomas Tyner carried the ball 10 times for 63 yards and two touchdowns, while Royce Freeman added 98 yards on the ground on 19 totes in the triumph. Oregon ran for 267 yards overall. Hogan completed 21-of-29 passes for 237 yards and ran for 42 yards on 11 carries for Stanford (5-4, 3-3), which was coming off a 38-14 victory over Oregon State. Devon Cajuste caught five passes for 116 yards in defeat. After Williamsons 25-yard boot, Tyner shot through a huge hole up the middle and spun away from Cardinal safety Jordan Richards at the 6 prior to crossing the goal line for a 21-yard TD run in the closing moments of the third. Ducks defensive back Erick Dargan stripped Hogan on Stanfords ensuing touch and linebacker Tony Washington scooped up the ball and returned it 21 yards to the Cardinal 30. Mariota ran in from seven yards out shortly thereafter. Following a Stanford three-and-out, Mariotas 25-yard TD pass to Darren Carrington made it 45-16 with 9:20 left. Mariota led three consecutive 75-yard TD drives to open the game and the Ducks sandwiched their first two scores around a Williamson 47-yard field goal to create immediate separation. Mariota broke out of an arm tackle from defensive tackle Henry Anderson and scampered for 19 yards on a 4th-and-5 from the Stanford 40 and then capped the drive when he rolled right and hit Charles Nelson in the flat for a 6-yard score. Facing a 3rd-and-7 from the Stanford 44 on their next drive, Mariota stepped up in the pocket, threw on the run and found Devon Allen, who found a soft spot in the Stanford zone for a gain of 22 yards. Mariota then darted for a 22-yard score on a zone-read keeper a play later to make it 14-3. Williamson split the uprights from 43 yards away on Stanfords following touch and Tyner capped Oregons ensuing 13-play trek with a 1-yard TD plunge for a 21-6 advantage early in the second. Cajuste hauled in a 42-yard pass on a post corner to put the ball at the Oregon 44 on the Cardinals next march. Oregon safety Derrick Malone tipped a Hogan pass at the line of scrimmage on a 4th-and-2 to give the ball back to the Ducks, who added a 40-yard Aidan Schneider field goal to extend the margin to 24-6 midway through the frame. Cajuste had receptions of 17 and 20 yards, respectively, on Stanfords next drive before Patrick Skov finished it off with a 1-yard TD plunge to cut the gap to 24-13 with 1:01 to go in the half. Game Notes Since 2012 coming in, Oregon averaged 17 points per game against Stanford and 48.9 against everyone else ... The Ducks outgained the Cardinal, 525-428 ... Oregon was 8-of-13 on third down, while Stanford finished 6-of-13. Ross Stripling Jersey . The 2012 Canadian Champion, representing CPA du Roussillon, was a mainstay on the Canadian National team for six years. The 25-year-old from Delson, Que., represented Canada many times in international competition including two 16th place finishes at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships, seven appearances at the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships and various ISU Grand Prix events, notably earning bronze at the 2011 Skate Canada International. This season, she placed fifth at the U.S. International Figure Skating Classic, fifth at Skate Canada International, sixth at Trophee Eric Bompard, 12th at the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships and earned bronze at the 2014 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. "This was a difficult decision for me, but I am excited to start a new chapter in my life. This past year, with changing my training base, helped renew my passion and love for training and competing," said Lacoste. "Im very happy with all that I have accomplished and I would like to thank everyone who made my journey and my career a success. Even though I had ups and downs during the years, you were always there to help and give me advice to be a better skater and a better person. And I would like to thank my family, especially my parents and my sister. They supported me through 20 years of my skating career, and I truly cherish the commitment and sacrifices they made to allow me to pursue my dreams." In addition to her family, Lacoste had manyy other people to acknowledge who supported her throughout the years.dddddddddddd "A special thanks to my dress maker, Mrs. Luis, my physiotherapists Claude Aquin and Stephane Fournier, my sport psychologist Wayne Halliwell, and all the other specialists who worked with me. I also appreciate all the choreographers who helped me develop that very important aspect of my figure skating. My home club, CPA Du Roussillon, ARPAS (Patinage Rive-Sud), Patinage Quéebec and Skate Canada were with me every step of the way, and your support is so appreciated. And lastly I would like to thank all the officials, volunteers, supporters and fans, who always had a word of encouragement or cheered me on. Without all of these people in my life, I would never have achieved my goals, or become the person that I am now." "Amelie represented Skate Canada proudly as a member of our national team for many years and as our Canadian champion in 2012," said Mike Slipchuk, High Performance Director, Skate Canada. "She worked with great desire and determination to achieve her goals, and pursue her dreams. We are pleased she plans to stay involved in skating, and look forward to keeping her engaged now as a member of our national team alumni." Although not completely sure of her future plans, Lacoste plans to stay connected to skating and to give back to the sport that has been so much a part of her life. She has a final word for anyone who wants to pursue and achieve a goal. "Believe in your dreams. Dreams do come true if you are willing do anything in your willpower to achieve it. Go after it. The most important thing, listen to your heart and follow your intuition." MIAMI -- Pat Riley walked into the room to begin his end-of-season availability annoyed, and armed with history. There have been franchises that have enjoyed prolonged runs of greatness during his 45 years as a player, coach and executive in the NBA -- the Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, Spurs and his Miami Heat among them -- and Thursday Riley pointed out each shares a trait. They all lost sometime. "I think everybody," the Heat president said moments after smacking the table to begin the news conference, "needs to get a grip." With that, Riley was off and running on a message-sending session that lasted nearly an hour. No players were there, but they surely heard his themes: He saw his teams mental fatigue during the year, but doesnt accept it; he isnt willing to let Miami fall from the ranks of the NBA elite, and the organization will do what it can to keep LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade together. "We have a tremendous opportunity here for long-term success," Riley said. "Dont think were not going to get beat again, so just get a grip, everybody. Thats my message. Its my message to the players, also." It was one of his many messages. Riley, who gets a reported $75,000 when hired to deliver motivational speeches, worked in anecdotes on everything from sipping Johnnie Walker Blue to playing James Ingram records to how even at 69 years old he still finds himself dreaming big. He was speaking with reporters, but clearly talking to players through the cameras. "Youve got to stay together, if youve got the guts," Riley said. "You dont find the first door and run out of it if you have an opportunity. This is four years now into this era, this team. Four finals -- its only been done three other times before -- and two championships. From day one to the end, it was like a Broadway show. It sort of ran out of steam. And we need to retool. We dont need to rebuild." How to retool is the question, but the answer isnt up to Riley yet. James, Bosh and Wade all need to decide if theyre going to opt out of their contracts, a choice that was probably going to be complicated even if the Heat hadnt lost the NBA Finals to San Antonio, ending Miamis two-year reign as league champions. From those decisions, Heat free-agents-to-be -- Ray Allen, Mario Chalmers, Chris Andersen and others -- may start charting their futures. Players from other teams will listen as well. Then Riley and the Heat spring into action on July 1, just as they did four years ago when they netted James, Bosh and Wade. Other than Norris Cole, no Heat player currently is locked into a fully guaranteed deal for next season. But Riley doesnt feel the Heat need to recruit current players again. "Were prepared," Riley said. "Weve got the main-themed book all written up and its dependent on whatever the scenario were presented with on July 1. Weve got a lot of room for flexibility. Theres a tremendous amount of flexibility depending on what happens. So were ready." He offered plenty of perspective on Thursday, about how he still feels like he choked away what should have been a title for the Lakers team he coached in 1984, but how they roared back with three titles in the next four seasons. He even referenced how San Antonio got much better this season after seeing a title in 2013 get taken away by Miami in dramatic fashion. "What happened last year with San Antonio? Did they run? They faced it," Riley said. "They faced it and they came back, and we saw the result. Well find out what were made of here. Its not about options. Its not about free agency. Its not about anything. Its about what we have built over four years here." Among Rileys more impassioned defences was the one of Wade, who was widely criticized for both missing 28 games in the regular season -- mainly part of a maintenance program laid out by the team -- and for struggling in Games 4 and 5 of the NBA Finals. "For the last 10 years, this has been a Dwyane Wade-driven thing," Riley said. "Now does he have to reinvent himself a little bit? Absolutely." Riley can only hope that reinvention is in Miami, and that James and Bosh are there as well. "Im an Irish guy who believes in big dreams," Riley said. "Im optimistic. Until thats proven different, I just have a level of optimism that there isnt a better place for players to be than Miami." Justin Smoak Jersey . It will continue until hes in full compliance with his treatment program. It is the second suspension for violating the leagues anti-drug program in less than a year. Sanders missed the final five games of the 2013-14 season; the centre said he was penalized for using marijuana.Sanders has had a checkered history since signing a four-year, $44 million contract extension before the 2013-14 season. The 6-foot-11 shot-blocking centre also missed time last season for 27 games with a fracture near the eye. He was also sidelined 25 games last season after surgery on his right thumb following an injury from a bar fight.Sanders hasnt played since a Dec. 23 loss to Charlotte, having missed the last 11 games. The Bucks first said it was because of the flu before attributing his absence to personal reasons. We are disappointed to learn the news of Larrys suspension. We will continue to work with Larry and the league to ensure he has the support he needs, the Bucks said in a statement Friday night.ddddddddddddSpeaking before a loss to Phoenix on Jan. 6, Sanders didnt go into detail about the reason behind his absence.Without these things being corrected, I dont think basketball will be something I can even do, he said then.He said it was false to speculate he might walk off the court for good. But what is true, he said, is that Im in the process of working things out now to do as best for my psyche and my physical health going forward. Theres a lot of evaluating going on. Theres a lot of inside talk just to put myself in the best place for my health right now.Sanders was taken with the 15th overall pick by Milwaukee in the 2010 NBA draft. He was averaging 7.3 points and 6.1 rebounds a game this season for the surprising Bucks.A year after winning just 15 games, Milwaukee is 21-19 in Jason Kidds first year as coach of the Bucks despite the absence of Sanders and a season-ending left knee injury last month to rookie Jabari Parker, the second overall pick last years draft. PEORIA, Ariz. -- The Seattle Mariners have officially signed veteran left-hander Randy Wolf and right-hander Zach Miner to minor-league contracts with invitations to spring training. The Mariners announced the signings on Thursday following the completion of physicals. Wolf and Miner are coming off Tommy John surgeries that have sidelined them in recent seasons. Wolf did not pitch in 2013 after having the surgery in late October 2012, the second such surgery of his career. Wolfs last major-league season came in 2012 when he made 26 starts with Milwaukee and Baltimore. Wolf has also pitched for Philadelphia, the Dodgers, San Diego and Houston. Miner, 31, spent last season with Philadelphia, appearing in 16 games for the Phillies, his first major-league action since 2009. Miner had arm surgery in May 2010. The 23-year-old restricted free agent appeared in all 48 games last season, finishing second among all Sabres skaters with 15 goals and 34 points. With 16 games left in the American Association season heading into Friday night, the Winnipeg Goldeyes fumbled a great chance to tighten the leagues wild card standings. Winnipeg gave up 16 hits in an 8-3 loss to the visiting Kansas City T-Bones in front of 6,023 fans at Shaw Park. With the loss, Winnipeg remains 2 ½ games behind the Gary SouthShore RailCats in the American Association wild card race. The RailCats lost to the Sioux Falls Canaries last night. Despite giving up two runs in the top of the first inning, Ray Sadler stroked a double off the left field wall in the bottom of the first inning to score Yurendell de Caster and Ryan Scoma and tie the game 2-2. Goldeyes starter Matt Rusch got through the second and third innings unscathed, but found trouble in the top of the fourth. Kansas City strung together three singles to lead off the fourth inning and grabbed a 4-2 lead. In the top of the fifth, the T-Bones tallied four runs on five hits. After giving up a one-run double to T-Bones first baseman Jairo Perez and walking the bases loaded, Rusch was relieved by Brendan Lafferty, who then gave up a two-run single to Kansas City third baseman Brandon Jones. The T-Bones other run came on an infield single. Goldeyes centre fielder Tyler Graham singled in Fehlandt Lentini in the ninth inning to complete the scoring. Offensively, the Goldeyees banged out 10 hits in the game, led by two-hit efforts from Graham, de Caster and Sadler.dddddddddddd "Unfortunately, we got beat today by the elements," Goldeyes manager Rick Forney said on the TSN 1290 post-game show. "We hit some balls on the screws to right field and right-centre field that got knocked down by the wind. If it was a north wind or no wind, we might hit five or six home runs. "But, we were sloppy on defence and didnt do enough to win. They played better than we did." Winnipeg has won five consecutive series at home and will need to take the final two games of this three-game series in order to keep the streak intact. Rusch fell to 5-4 on the season after being on the hook for all eight of Kansas Citys runs. It is his first loss since June 21. Lafferty gave up three inherited runs in the fifth inning, but threw a scoreless sixth inning. Kaohi Downing then came in a shutout the T-Bones for the final three innings. He didnt even allow a hit. T-Bones starter Rick Zagone picked up his first win for Kansas City this season. He went six innings. Keith Picht tossed the final three innings for his first save of the season. HOUSTON -- Houston Astros right-hander Mark Appel, the top overall pick in the 2013 draft, is recovering after an appendectomy. Appel had the procedure in Houston in Thursday. General manager Jeff Luhnow says the team expects the pitcher will be able to report to spring training on time. The Astros also announced that left-hander Raul Valdes had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee this week. Valdes will report to camp on Feb. 15, but his recovery time is estimated at four to six weeks. Valdes was claimed off waivers from Philadelphia in October. Chicago Bears David Montgomery Jersey . WASHINGTON -- The Washington Redskins have turned to a familiar name associated with a notorious blunder as they try to fill the biggest hole on their roster. Ryan Clark, who was allowed to leave Washington nearly a decade ago when they decided that Adam Archuleta was the better option at safety, was scheduled for a visit to Redskins Park. The team on Wednesday was also planning to host defensive end Antonio Smith, although another of its targeted players -- cornerback Corey Graham -- decided to sign with the Buffalo Bills. In addition, the Redskins announced the signings of receiver Andre Roberts, guard Shawn Lauvao and special teams standout Adam Hayward. All three agreed to their deals shortly after the start of the leagues open market period Tuesday afternoon. There was another addition: a one-year deal for free agent tackle Bruce Campbell, a 2010 draft pick who sat out last season with a shoulder injury and has yet to start an NFL game. His signing continued a modest approach to free agency despite salary cap money to spend after a 3-13 season. Campbell would provide some competition for Tyler Polumbus at right tackle, although the Redskins were expected to pursue a proven starter at the position. Campbells deal is worth $710,000, according to The Washington Post. The Redskins initial free agency moves were noteworthy for two reasons: They represent a more pragmatic approach now that general manager Bruce Allen has been given control of the roster, and they didnt include a safety. Most of the top available safeties were snapped up wwithin hours of the start of free agency.ddddddddddddJairus Byrd, T.J. Ward, Donte Whitner and Antoine Bethea are off the board. The Redskins made a play for Mike Mitchell, but he chose to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Redskins face uncertainty at both safety positions. Incumbents Brandon Meriweather and Reed Doughty are both free agents; Meriweather has battled injuries and inconsistency, while Doughty is more valuable in a special teams role. Washington drafted a pair of safeties last year, but Phillip Thomas missed the season with a foot injury and Bacarri Rambo lost a starting job after struggling early in the season. Clark turns 35 this year and is on the backside of his career, but he is expected to field offers from several teams before accepting an offer. He would add leadership to a defence that is losing captain London Fletcher, who plans to retire. The Redskins rue the fact that they didnt have Clark in his prime: He had eight productive seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers after Washington didnt re-sign him after the 2005 season, while Archuleta became one of the biggest free agent busts for a franchise that has had more than its share. Clark announced on ESPN that he would be visiting the Redskins, although his appearance on the Bristol-based network might have led to complications for his free agency plans. Late Wednesday, he tweeted: "Is this a sign? Crazy traffic in Conn. Might miss the flight to DC!" Later, he tweeted: "Man, now my flight is delayed! Sign .2? Come on man!" On February 20, down 2-0 against the Americans with under four minutes to play, it looked as if the Canadian womens hockey teams dream of capturing their fourth straight Olympic gold medal had faded away. Team Canadas experience though allowed them to overcome the late 2-0 deficit and make history beating the Americans 3-2 in overtime. However, the comeback that happened in less than 15 minutes of playing time took years of experience and preparation. On the bench was Jayna Hefford. A member of every Canadian Olympic team since 1998, Hefford used all of that experience for the tense third period and overtime. "With six, seven minutes left in the third, I thought its not looking good, but that thought only lasted five seconds. Once we got that first one, I knew wed be fine." Hefford and Team Canada faced a big hurdle weeks before the historic gold medal game. Dan Church, their coach since 2012, unexpectedly resigned two months before the Olympics were to begin. Also, many veterans that were expected to carry a lot of the teams responsibilities were surprisingly not selected. "With Dan, we tried to ask some questions to get some answers, but we really didnt find anything. It got to the point where we realized the decision was out of our hands." Under new coach Kevin Dineen, the team spent ten days in Austria to regroup before they headed to Sochi. It was a time for rest and recuperation before the competition since every member of the team was exhausted both physically and mentally. Despite the challenges, the Canadians put together a string of wins that led them to the gold medal game. And the team didnt need any extra motivation when they saw who was at the other end of the ice. "There is no one youd rather beat then the Americans. Theyre the best team outside of us. Thats the team you want to play in any final," says Hefford. Although the Canadians were down a pair of goals, that first tally gave them a lifeline. The second goal tied the game, creating emotions for even the veteran players that thought they had seen it all. "When (Marie-Philip) Poulin got the tying goal, thats the most excited Ive ever been for any moment of a game in any moment of my career," Hefford says. "But in the third period and overtime, you try to contain your emotions a little bit." The team could let their emotions lose eight minutes into overtime when Poulin, who was the hero in Vancouver in 2010, scored again to give Canada yet another gold. "It still feels very surreal how that game dramatically turned. Its such a great feeling and its still hard to believe," says Hefford. Theres very little Hefford has not accomplished in her career but after a fourth gold medal, it would be tempting to go for a fifth in 2018. "After Vancouver I didnt know if I was going to keep playing. I felt really good and I thought I had four more years. But now its time for me to look at my options. Going out after a game like that would be perfect." There is nothing more perfect than going out on top of the hockey world. Randall Cobb Jersey . -- Josh Smith made a 3-pointer as time expired and finished with 20 points to lift the Detroit Pistons to a 99-98 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday night in both teams exhibition finale.ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Dan Ellis learned a few things about the Anaheim Ducks top scorers during 1 1/2 seasons as the teams backup goalie, and he put all that knowledge to work in a breakthrough victory for the Dallas Stars. Ellis made 26 saves against his former team in his 14th career shutout, and Trevor Daley scored in the Stars 2-0 victory over the Ducks on Saturday night. Ellis played in 23 games as a backup in Anaheim from February 2011 to 2012, but did his best work while absorbing innumerable shots in practice from Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Teemu Selanne. Ellis used that familiarity throughout his second victory over the Ducks this season, even denying Perrys point-blank chance in the final minute by getting an outstretched pad in front of an open net. "Ive practiced with them, and I understand some things they like to do," Ellis said with a smile. Captain Jamie Benn added an empty-net goal with 28 seconds left for the Stars, who snapped a five-game road skid with one of their biggest wins of a mediocre season. Ellis had sat out the Stars previous nine games since Jan. 12, and he acknowledged a bit of game rust in his return. But Kari Lehtonens veteran backup posted Dallas third shutout victory in its last six games, and coach Lindy Ruff said Ellis probably will get more playing time in the final week before Lehtonen and Ruff head to the Olympics. "He gave us a rock-solid game," Ruff said of Ellis. "We only had a couple of big breakdowns, and he was there for us." After the game, Ellis met up in the hallway between the dressing rooms with Jonas Hiller, the Ducks starter during Ellis time with the club. "I loved my time here," Ellis said. "Its still the best place Ive ever played and lived in, but it was good to get these two points for us." Hiller stopped 25 shots for the NHL-leading Ducks, who were shut out for the first time all season. Anaheim has lost three of five at Honda Center after opening the season 20-0-2 at home. At the start of a four-game stretch over eight days before the Olympic break, the grind of the regular season is finally hitting the Ducks aafter two spectacular months.ddddddddddddAnaheim is 4-4 since Jan. 15, but still five points ahead of defending champion Chicago atop the overall standings. "We didnt have any sustained pressure," Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said. "Against a team like Dallas, you have to win the board battles. If you dont win them, their speed is so good, its going to be a real tough game for you." The Ducks played without third-leading scorer Nick Bonino after the versatile centre injured his wrist. Boudreau also scratched healthy offence-minded forwards Dustin Penner and Kyle Palmieri. While Anaheims roll has slowed, Dallas is looking to build momentum into the break during a three-game West Coast trip over the next five days. The Stars began the day in an 11th-place tie in the Western Conference. After a scoreless first period, Daley got his fourth goal of the season early in the second on the rebound of a shot by centre Cody Eakin, who blew by Patrick Maroon to create the chance. Only Hiller kept the score close with a handful of stellar plays in the final two periods, including a post-to-post toe save on Rich Peverley late in the second. Hiller has lost his last three home starts after his franchise-record 14-game winning streak ended last month. "It seems like one game we play pretty good, then the next game it seems like weve lost everything again," Hiller said. "We dont have that consistency. You cant just always think you can come back in the third period to win a game." Anaheim had several decent chances in the final minutes, but was shut out for the first time since last March 27. The Ducks also lost defenceman Mark Fistric to a lower-body injury early in the game. NOTES: Along with Bonino, the Ducks had three prominent healthy scratches who have combined for 90 points this season: Penner, Palmieri and D Bryan Allen. ... Just 41 seconds in, Eakin skated to the Stars dressing room with a bloody cut on his face after he got hit by the puck. He returned for the second period. ... Daley has three goals in his last 10 games after scoring just once in his first 31 this season. MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Marc Gasol had 21 points and 10 rebounds, Mike Miller added 19 points, and the Memphis Grizzlies made a strong push in the third quarter to beat the Philadelphia 76ers 117-95 on Friday night. Tony Allen scored 15 points to help the Grizzlies preserve their playoff hopes. Memphis entered the night trailing the Suns by a game for the Western Conferences final post-season spot. The Suns were playing San Antonio. Nick Calathes added 12 points for Memphis, while Zach Randolph finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Grizzlies won their 13th straight at home, matching the franchise record set last season. Tony Wroten and Thaddeus Young led the Sixers with 18 points apiece. Elliot Williams added 13 for Philadelphia, which lost its third straight and fifth in the last six. The Grizzlies held a 10-point lead at halftime and outscored the Sixers 30-17 in the third with Allen and Gasol scoring eight points each. Memphis continued to dominate on the interior, outscoring Philadelphia 60-48 in the paint and outrebounding the Sixers 49-36 for the game. The Grizzlies shot 54 per cent from the field, compared to 44 per cent for the 76ers. Memphis shot 55 per cent in the first half to carry a 57-47 lead at intermission. Miller was 5 of 7, including connecting on all three of his shots outside the arc, as he and Gasol scored 13 points each. Gasol converted all but one of his seven shots in the half. Young scored 10 points for Philadelphia. Memphis led by as many as 12 in the first half, and its biggest problem was getting back on defence, allowing a couple of breakaways by Philadelphia. One of those irritated coach Dave Joerger so much, he called a quick timeout despite the Grizzlies leading. Memphis was hampered by eight turnovers in the half, and committed 16 on the night. The Grizzlies continued to build the lead in the third, turning up the defence as the Sixers seemed to lose whatever spirit they had at this point in a tough season. Near the end of the quarter and with the shot clock running down, Gasol connected from outside the top of the key -- only his second 3-pointer of the season -- to help the Grizzlies carry an 87-64 lead into the fourth. That was enough for Memphis to coast to the finish and get starters some rest heading into the final stretch run of the season. NOTES: The Sixers had several Memphis connections. Wroten was drafted by the Grizzlies. Elliot Williams and 10-day signee Adonis Thomas played at the University of Memphis, while Thaddeus Young was a high school standout in the city. Arnett Moultrie, who also played high school ball in Memphis, was inactive serving five-game suspension for violating league anti-drug policy. ... BUFFALO, N.Y. Another prospective group could include Toronto-based businessmen Larry Tanenbaum, chairman of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, and Edward Rogers, deputy chairman of Rogers Communications. Other names that have been circulating include Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula and former owner B. MIAMI -- UFC fighter Thiago Silva is in jail after being accused of threatening his wife with a gun. Broward County jail records show that Silva, 31, was being held without bond following his arrest Thursday on charges that included attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and obstruction without violence. But his attorney, Scott Saul, told The Associated Press that the charges were downgraded during a Friday court appearance to aggravated assault with a firearm and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Saul said he entered a not guilty plea on Silvas behalf. Authorities said Silva took a gun to a mixed martial arts academy in Oakland Park and threatened to shoot his estranged wife, Thaysa, and her now-boyfriend, who called police and Silva drove away. Authorities tracked him down to his home where he was holed up for hours until he surrendered. Authorities used a stun gun on him before he was taken into custody. Ultimate Fighting Championship said on its website that it has terminated the Silvas contract, effective immediately. A message left with UFC was not immediately returned Saturday. Broward Circuit Judge John Hurley noted during the court appearance that there was no probable cause to support the attempted murder charges but ordered Silva held without bond after expressing concern about the nature of the allegations and said Silva, a Brazilian mixed martial artist, posed a flight risk. "Hes upset because hes been humiliated and hes in jail," Saul said of Silva. "Hes been very unfairly treated as some type of aggressive animal just because hes a professional athlete. There are no marks on this womans body. Hes not accused of ever hitting her. When Im dealing with him, Im dealing with the perfect gentleman." But a probable cause affidavit shows Silva had threatened his estranged wife on several occasions. Thaysa Silva told deputies on Jan. 30 that she and her husband had been arguing over an extra marital affair when Thiago pointed a gun at her and said he was going to kill her, the report stated. He then placed the gun in her mouth. The same day, Thaysa Silva obtained a temporary injunction of protection against him. On Wednesday, police say he sent her a text message in Portuguese that said "...you are going to die. I am going to hire someone to kill you." The next day Thiago Silva "had been drinking and extremely intoxicated" when he drove to the gym and threatened to kill his wife and her now-boyfriend who owns the gym, the report said. "I will go in the gym and start shooting everyone," Silva said. There were 25 people in the gym at the time, the report noted. The boyfriend went outside and Thiago threatened to kill him and his wife, the report said. The boyfriend eventually called police and Silva drove off. He was later arrested at his home and appeared to be intoxicated and "uttered that he did not know what was going on," the report said. The report said Silva and his wife had been married for 13 years, but Saul said the two were separated. Silva (16-3 with two no contests) has had a checkered history in mixed martial arts. In November 2012, he tested positive for marijuana following a win over Stanislav Nedkov in Macau. The fight was declared a no contest and Silva was banned for six months. He agreed to participate in an approved drug-rehabilitation program. The former light-heavyweight contender admitted to doping and tampering with his urine at a UFC 125 drug test. He said he did it because he injured his back in advance of the January 2011 fight against Brandon (The Truth) Vera. Silva won the fight, which was turned into a no contest after the failed drug test The Nevada State Athletic Commission had alleged he submitted a specimen that was "inconsistent with human urine" before the bout. Silva was banned for a year and fined US$33,750. Semyon Varlamov Jersey . TORONTO – He was nowhere to be found in the fall of 2013. While the first day of Maple Leafs training camp got underway at the Mastercard Centre in west Toronto, Cody Franson sat at home in his apartment, waiting for 3pm practice with the Ryerson Rams. He was mired in the second of three contract struggles, this one finally coming to a close on Sept. 26, less than a week before the start of the regular season. "It was really weird," he recalled of the experience. "Ive had a couple negotiations go close to the wire, but never where I anticipated that Id actually have to leave, pack up my bags and actually leave the rink the day before camp rather than just feeling like somethings going to get done. That was an odd feeling to wrap my head around. Its unfortunate that thats the way that it had to go, but thats the business sometimes." Franson remained a restricted free agent this past offseason and though it took the threat of arbitration, he and the Leafs were able to come to terms on yet another one-year deal, this one for $3.3 million. And so unlike last fall and the fall before that, the now 27-year-old defender begins what he agrees is the most important season of his NHL career without a contract hiccup to worry about. "I think Franny knows and feels that he has to have a better season than he did last year," said head coach, Randy Carlyle following the first day of on-ice workouts. "When a guy misses camp it can have an effect over the course of an 82-game schedule that he doesnt start well or he has more valleys than peaks. We saw that and we experienced that with Cody Franson for periods of time [last season] and hell be the first one to admit it." Franson describes his 2013-14 campaign as an inconsistent picture, on point some nights, not so much on others. He bounced between a rotating cast of defence partners and troubled defensive strategy, ultimately unable to fulfill the top-four role (and increased competition) the club had hoped he might be capable of assuming. His possession numbers were amongst the best on the team and he remained the highest scoring defender in Toronto, but he never quite found the groove of a year earlier, when he broke out with 29 points in 45 games while holding down 19 minutes per night. The stench of another collapse also lingered, almost to the point of no escape. Trips back home to tiny Sicamous, British Columbia this past summer brought with them the expected questions from friends and family, all curious as to how he and the Leafs could tumble so rapidly from a sure playoff position to yet another stinging miss last spring. "It just seems to be the common theme," he said of the meltdown, the third in as many years. That disastrous finish also left him wondering about his future in Toronto, especially precarious with new management in the fold. "When things happen like that you never know whats gonna happen," Franson said. "That opens a lot of doors that maybe typically wouldnt be open had we done well." His place with the organization has never really been all that secure. Signed to three one-year deals, each with a dispute of some kind, Franson has mostly been left wondering where exactly he fits in the Leafs big picture. And hed like to change that this season. In describing his goals for the coming year, Franson says he would like to keep up the offensive production, remain a physical presence, and become an improved all-around defender. Because the Leafs added Stephane Robidas and Roman Polak in the offseason, Carlyle may be able to employ him in a less demanding role, something closer to the third pairing duty and competition he excelled with in 2013 – be it alongside Morgan Rielly or Jake Gardiner. Set to become an unrestricted free agent for the first time next summer, Franson has a lot riding on the year that follows. Its not a stretch to call it the biggest season of his career. "Oh, definitely," he said. "With [unrestricted] free agency next year Im out to prove that I can do the job that they need me to do. This is where I want to be. Im hopeful that something can get done. Ive got to have a big year in order for that to happen." Al Jefferson Jersey .
